Volunteer Opportunities

As of this season, the Herreshoff Marine Museum is transitioning to use the Volgistics Scheduling System to help us fulfill our scheduling needs. Click here

Docents and Educators
Volunteers will guide visitors through the Museum, which contains exhibits, photographs and memorabilia related to the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company; and through the America's Cup Hall of Fame, which has many artifacts and information on the America's Cup competition. Docents escort small and large groups, including school groups, and often work together conducting tours.

Training sessions are available throughout the year, both as a group and on an individual basis. Volunteers will receive training materials and have access to the resources of the Museum's library and archives.

Museum Store Assistant
The Museum's gift shop is adjacent to the admissions area and is a lively and interesting place to work. Working in the gift shop provides an opportunity to meet visitors from all over the world. The volunteer would assist the gift shop manager with sales and inventory and help maintain the appearance of the store.

Some knowledge of computers is helpful but not essential. The gift shop has an easy-to-use scanning system. Training will be provided on an individual basis.

Boat Keepers
This is an opportunity for volunteers to assist the museum's boat restoration and maintenance staff with their projects, most involving small vintage sailing craft. Project work would include rigging; spar, hull and sail repair; and maintaining the facility and waterfront.

Some knowledge of hand tools is helpful. An interest in classic small craft is desirable. This work is "hands-on".

Admissions Desk Assistant
The Admissions Desk Assistant is the first person people meet when they come into the Museum. The person at the desk greets and admits visitors, takes in admissions fees, and provides a general overview of the Museum. The Admissions Desk Assistant has the opportunity to meet visitors from all over the world.

Volunteers must be friendly and like to work with the public. Comfort with computers is helpful for the admissions process. Training is available on an on-going basis for both for groups and at the individual level.

Office Assistant
The Museum office is located on the second floor of the main Museum building. Although the Museum is open from May through the end of October, the office is open year-round.  The volunteer would assist in general office work such as answering phones, filing, assisting in mailings, etc.

Good telephone manners and comfort in working with the public are essential. Some knowledge of computers is desirable. Training is available at the individual level.

Grounds Assistant
The Museum has several gardens which would appreciate some tender loving care throughout the summer months. Volunteers should have some experience in garden planning and maintenance. Museum staff would assist with heavy work such as bed preparation and watering, but the volunteer would be responsible for planting, weeding and pruning.
