This Month:
The Boat Shop Program runs through March.  This month our 12 1/2, POOKA, will receive new coamings from a massive piece of white oak (Quercus Alba), an outstanding tree among all trees. We drove to the Connecticut hills to buy this oak from New England Naval Timbers. Come help us turn this stunning wood into varnished coamings.  Students are re-riveting URCHIN, another historic 12 1/2.  Come visit our boat-shop and meet our dedicated staff and volunteers.  We would love your help!

Dates: September 27 - March 30

Tuesdays for High School students
Wednesdays for Middle School students

Hours: 3:00 to 5:00
Possibly some Saturdays dependant on availability of volunteers

About the Program: Now in it's second year, this program allows students to work alongside boat-builders and teachers to learn the skills and art of caring for, preserving, and restoring the Herreshoff 12 ½s, a Fish Class, and an S-Class, used in the Museum’s summer sailing program. The classroom is in the same complex of 19th century buildings where the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. designed and built the boats. The new after school program reaches out to the Museum's skilled volunteers, staff, and regional boat restoration specialists to serve as mentors to middle and high school students.

The goals of the program are to help young people grow to become more responsible individuals while contributing to their community’s rich cultural heritage and modern industry. The curriculum teaches a variety of hands-on and interpersonal skills including project planning; communication; shop safety; sanding, painting, and varnishing; time management; tool use; and team building. The Museum is pleased to have the cooperation of local leaders in the marine trades, including Guck Inc., Kinder Industries, Hall Spars, and Bristol Boats.

This program is made possible with a grant from the Collectors FoundationCollectors Foundation is an educational grant-making organization funded by collector vehicle and classic boat enthusiasts to serve youth development and the long-term interests of the collector vehicle and classic boat  communities.  More information about the Foundation can be found on its website: www.collectorsfoundation.org.
