Can You Identify this Hardware?
Recently, the Museum was asked about the hardware shown in the attached photographs. Can you help us identify this item?
The part is bronze and the name Paxton & Co. is cast into the body. The outside diameter of the large ring is 5.5” and the inside diameter is 3.375”.
The story goes (perhaps embellished over the years) that this part was conceived by Teo Petterson, a sailmaker working with Starling Burgess and Harold Vanderbilt in 1934; and that this hardware was used aboard the Cup defender. Supposedly only four of these were made and used before the part was banned.
